In a historic first for the African continent, Nigeria is set to host the 5th high-level global ministerial meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) from June 28 to 30, this year.

The summit, themed "One Health — Advancing Global AMR Commitments through Local Action," marks a paradigm shift in global health diplomacy as the dialogue moves to the global south. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will preside over the event, which is expected to draw high-level delegations from over 100 nations, including the heads of state from Botswana and Ghana.

The selection of Abuja as the venue underscores a growing recognition that low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear the disproportionate brunt of drug-resistant infections. Previous iterations of the summit were held in the Netherlands, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, however, Dr. Jean Pierre Nyemazi, director of the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, pointed out that hosting the event in Nigeria is essential to bridging the gap between international policy and the ground realities of developing nations.

Central to the Abuja deliberations is the 'one health' framework, an integrated approach acknowledging the inextricable links between human, animal, and environmental health. Departing from the human-centric focus of earlier meetings, this assembly will convene a diverse cohort of ministers across the health, agriculture, environment, and finance portfolios. The objective is to curb the rampant misuse of antimicrobials across all sectors, thereby checking the rise of superbugs that jeopardize global food security, sources informed.

According to sources, a primary goal for the summit is to translate the high-level political declarations made at the 2024 UN General Assembly into tangible local interventions. To maintain momentum, leaders will employ the 'Troika mechanism', a collaborative governance structure comprising past, present, and future hosts. This framework is designed to ensure continuity from the 2024 Jeddah commitments and to hold nations accountable for their multisectoral national action plans and surveillance systems.

The economic dimensions of the crisis will also take centre stage, with experts highlighting the massive return on investment in AMR prevention. Dr. Ayoade Alakija, Nigeria’s ministerial global envoy on AMR, pointed out that every single dollar invested in the cause yields eleven dollar return. By involving finance ministers, the summit aims to revive the spirit of the 2001 Abuja Declaration to secure sustainable funding for water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and equitable access to life-saving medicines.

The global community faces a daunting task, with an ambitious target to slash AMR-related deaths by 10 per cent by 2030. Given that drug resistance was associated with nearly 4.9 million deaths in 2019, speakers at the curtain-raiser briefing emphasized the need to scale up cost-effective strategies. Simple measures, such as improved handwashing protocols and enhanced diagnostic tools, are seen as vital to protecting vulnerable populations who are most at risk as existing medicines lose their efficacy.

Complementing the diplomatic efforts, the Global AMR Media Alliance (GAMA) has announced the third edition of the Global AMR Media Awards to foster evidence-based reportage. These awards will feature a special category for stories highlighting AMR survivors, ensuring the human cost of the crisis remains in public focus. As June approaches, the Abuja summit is being viewed as a critical checkpoint for the world to 'walk the talk' and prevent a future where common infections once again become fatal.
