In a significant move to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors, the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) has issued a comprehensive advisory urging all healthcare organizations (HCOs) to strengthen their fire safety protocols. This directive is based on the Union ministry of health's notification highlighting the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures across healthcare facilities in India.
Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO of NABH, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a statement. He said, “Fire safety is a paramount concern for all healthcare facilities. Adherence to stringent fire safety standards not only safeguards lives but also contributes to maintaining operational continuity and preserving essential healthcare services."
The advisory outlines several key steps that HCOs must undertake to mitigate fire risks, including regular fire risk assessments by conducting thorough fire risk assessments and audits to identify and address vulnerabilities.
To ensure proper storage of flammable materials, maintain electrical systems, and install fire detection and suppression systems.
Provide regular training on fire evacuation procedures, including protocols for evacuating patients with special needs.
Establish clear communication channels and emergency response protocols to coordinate effectively during emergencies.
As per the advisory, it has been directed to periodically review and update fire safety policies and procedures to incorporate best practices and address emerging risks.
"Failure to prioritize fire safety not only jeopardizes lives but also poses significant legal and reputational risks to healthcare organizations," Dr. Kochhar noted. He further urged all HCOs to demonstrate unwavering commitment to fire safety and integrate it as a core component of their quality assurance framework.
To support healthcare organizations in implementing these measures, NABH has made available the "Advisory for Minimum Essential Fire Safety Measures" on its website. This document serves as a guideline to ensure patient safety and compliance with statutory fire safety obligations.
