Clinical excellence and research can no longer exist in isolation. The future of dental education lies in creating professionals who are equally adept at delivering patient care, interpreting scientific evidence, and contributing to new knowledge. Institutions must integrate research, clinical practice, and academics into a unified learning ecosystem rather than treating them as separate pillars, said Prof. Puneet Ahuja, Principal & Dean, DJ College of Dental Sciences & Research.
Students need to gain hands-on experience through a patient footfall at outpatient departments. Strategic collaborations further expand the scope of learning beyond the classroom. Partnerships with Indian and global universities give adequate exposure for multidisciplinary research, advanced clinical practices, and global academic perspectives, he added.
Further, the role of technology and digital dentistry in modern healthcare training is also gaining ground. We see that digital dentistry has transitioned from being an emerging trend to becoming the clinical standard across modern oral healthcare. As a result, dental institutions must move beyond teaching technology as an elective competency and instead integrate digital workflows into every stage of clinical education, Prof Ahuja told Pharmabiz in an email.
Students today need exposure to technologies that are already commonplace in contemporary dental practice, including CAD/CAM systems, dedicated 3D printing laboratories, advanced dental laboratories, and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), which enable greater diagnostic precision, improved treatment planning, and enhanced patient safety through reduced radiation exposure. Contemporary skill laboratories further strengthen learning by allowing students to develop procedural competence and confidence in a simulated environment before entering live clinical settings, he pointed out.
Also, technology integration also extends beyond clinical infrastructure. Smart classrooms equipped with advanced audio-visual systems, modular clinical integration, a fully automated library, and access to more than 110 full-text journals, over 3,000 books, and DCI e-library resources support a blended, evidence-based learning environment. Equally important is continuous faculty upskilling, ensuring educators remain aligned with evolving digital technologies and modern pedagogical practices, he said.
