The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has issued immediate recall of unsafe cosmetics from the market after FDA lab government analyst tests declared three cosmetic products as Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) due to the presence of toxic heavy metals. The state regulator has directed an immediate halt to the sale, purchase, use and distribution of the unsafe cosmetic products to safeguard public health.
Laboratory analysis revealed that Goree Beauty Cream, Face Fresh Gold (Beauty Cream + Beauty Serum) and Golden Star Beauty Cream contain mercury and lead beyond the permissible safety limits. According to the Food and Drugs Administration, these excessive levels of heavy metals make the products unsafe for human use and pose a potential health risk to consumers.
Officials also observed serious violations in the packaging and labelling of the products. The cosmetic products do not mention the name and address of the manufacturer and are missing mandatory information such as the batch number, manufacturing date and expiry date. The absence of these details makes it difficult to trace the products and raises concerns about their authenticity and quality.
The Maharashtra FDA has instructed consumers to immediately stop purchasing and using the three cosmetic products. Retailers, wholesalers, distributors and e-commerce platforms have been directed to discontinue their sale, stocking, display and distribution without delay. Stockists and distributors have also been ordered to report the quantity of products available with them and begin recalling all stocks already supplied to the market. The details of available inventory and recalled quantities must be submitted to the concerned Maharashtra FDA office at the earliest.
The administration has appealed to members of the public to remain alert and report any information regarding the availability or sale of these products through its toll-free helpline or official email. Officials said that public cooperation will play an important role in ensuring that unsafe cosmetic products are removed from the market quickly.
G R Rokade, joint commissioner-cum-drug controller of the Maharashtra FDA, said that the action has been taken in the interest of public health after laboratory findings confirmed that the products failed to meet prescribed quality standards. He urged consumers to purchase cosmetic products only from authorised sources and carefully verify that every product carries complete labelling details, including the manufacturer's name and address, batch number, manufacturing date and expiry date, before making a purchase.
The drug controller further stated that the immediate recall, strict monitoring of supply chains and active participation of consumers and businesses are essential to prevent exposure to hazardous cosmetic products. It has been reiterated that coordinated action by all stakeholders will help strengthen consumer safety, improve compliance with regulatory standards and ensure that only quality assured cosmetic products remain available in the market.
