Pronto Consult observes India’s 2025 healthcare shift from reactive protection to aspirational prevention

Pronto Consult, a premier pharma market research company based in Mumbai, has released a comprehensive year-end analysis revealing that Indian healthcare in 2025 was defined by a deeply emotional commitment to protecting existing health.

Dr. Hari Natarajan, managing director of Pronto Consult, shared these insights with Pharmabiz, noting that rather than experimenting with new health trends, consumers focused on routine care for chronic conditions like cardiac health, diabetes, and hypertension. This behaviour indicates a nation prioritizing stability, with healthcare spending acting as a protective shield for the population’s long-term well-being.

Respiratory health emerged as a primary climate coping mechanism during the year, with purchase patterns tracking AQI (air quality index) charts more closely than medical prescriptions. High pollution levels triggered a surge in preventive inhaler refills, driven by a pervasive fear of breathlessness among urban populations. Dr. Natarajan highlighted that the environment has now become a more significant driver of healthcare behaviour than traditional doctor-led advice alone.

Mental health spending also saw a quiet explosion, growing privately through digital tools rather than public discourse. The rise of therapy apps, sleep trackers, and mood journaling tools suggests that while social stigma remains, improved digital privacy has unlocked a new wave of consumption. This shift allows Indians to manage anxiety and personal well-being discreetly from their own devices, a trend Dr. Natarajan identifies as a key pillar for future growth.

A landmark shift occurred with the emergence of GLP-1 (A hormone-mimicking medication) and metabolic therapies as the nation's first aspirational medical purchases. Unlike traditional treatments bought to control an existing disease, these were purchased to rewrite a future version of the user. Though the user base remained niche and largely urban in 2025, the social discussion and value growth of these therapies far outweighed their physical clinical volume.

Over-the-counter (OTC) products acted as the daily nervous system of Indian health, with small packs significantly outperforming larger formats. By minimizing decision friction and lowering the trial barrier for consumers, these accessible formats allowed healthcare products to integrate seamlessly into daily life. This trend reflects a market where accessibility and the lack of post-purchase guilt are essential for consumer engagement.

As the market moves into 2026, Dr. Natarajan observes a transition from a reactive ‘stop the pain’ mindset to one of anticipation and daily ritual. Products like oral rehydration salts (ORS) and vitamins are being repositioned as daily hydration and routine maintenance rather than emergency fixes for fatigue. This evolution sets the stage for consumers to view themselves as proactive managers of their own long-term metabolic health.

The sheer scale of this healthcare journey is truly immense when converted into human terms. Dr. Hari Natarajan noted that if all ORS (oral rehydration salts) sachets sold in 2025 were laid end-to-end, they would stretch from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and back multiple times, representing hydration that literally travels the country. Furthermore, if the total tablets consumed by Indians were stacked flat, they would circle the Earth more than twice or create a ‘pill path’ stretching all the way from Mumbai to New York. If every cardiac tablet were a heartbeat, India would have added enough extra beats to power the nation’s pulse nonstop for an entire year. Additionally, the volume of OTC (over-the-counter) packs sold could cover the length of the Delhi Metro hundreds of times like a ‘health carpet’, while every probiotic capsule sold represents a ’micro-garden’ capable of planting a forest of gut health in every kitchen. By turning molecules into distance and breath, these figures provide the bridge to 2026, where healthcare shifts toward preventive care, lifestyle adoption, and patient-centric solutions.
