Industrial output in pharma sector reports 9.2% decline in August

Production of pharmaceuticals and botanical products in the country has reported a decline of 9.2% in the month of August, as compared to a growth of 3.6% reported in the month of July, 2025.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the manufacturing of pharmaceutical, medicinal chemical and botanical products in the country has registered a decline of 2.1% during the first five months of the fiscal year, from April to August, 2025.

During the month of August, when the overall manufacturing activity along with capital goods and infrastructure sectors reported a slower growth, the index for manufacturing in the pharma sector stood at 193.1 as compared to 212.6 during the same month last year.

This is against the growth reported in the industry groups of manufacturing of basic metals (12.2%), coke and refined petroleum products (5.4%), and manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi trailers (9.8%). The overall industrial activity during the month of August, according to reports, has slowed to 4% from a growth of 4.3% reported in July.

The monthly industrial production growth for the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemicals and botanical products has been fluctuating during the five months of the current fiscal year, with the index moving from 231.5 in April, 243.5 in May, 220.8 in June, 232.6 in July, before declining to 193.1 in August.

The production in the sector has reported a 3.9% decline in April, a 3.1% decline in May, and a 2.1% growth in June, this year. During the fiscal year 2024-25, production in the sector has declined 1.1% compared to the previous year, according to official data.

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for the sector during the first five months was at 224.3 as compared to 229.1 in the same period of last year.

The decline in production during the month of August is compared to a 3.6% growth reported in the month of July. The IIP for the sector stood at 232.9 in July, 2025, as compared to 224.7 in July, 2024. However, the first four months of the fiscal year 2025-26 showed a production index decline of 0.4% at 232.2 compared to 233.2 in the same period of previous fiscal year.
