Karnataka government has now further strengthened the governing body of the Karnataka State Pharmacy Council (KSPC) with the appointment of three members.
They are Kempaiah Suresh, Deputy Drugs Controller-1, Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr Satish Kumar BK, professor, department of pharmaceutics, Government College of Pharmacy, Bengaluru and BB Omkareswar, assistant drugs controller, Karnataka FDA.
The three members will report to Srinivas K, FDA Commissioner, who has been appointed as the administrator of the council early this month.
This follows after the state government dissolved the governing body of the KSPC early this month. All along the representatives of the Council were either elected or nominated.
Strengthening the governing body will improve the quality of pharmacy practice in the state. The activities of the KSPC continue unabated which include inspection of registered pharmacy outlets if they are dispensing medications with the presence of a pharmacist. For this in April 2023, the Council had appointed four inspectors to conduct inspections of pharmacy outlets, verify the presence of registered pharmacists and the display of their registration details. If there are no registered pharmacists at the outlets, it is a violation of the Section 42 of Pharmacy Act, 1948.
Also the Council will continue to grant registration to the eligible pharmacists having the requisite qualification as detailed in the Pharmacy Act. It has cautioned that no qualified and registered pharmacist can lend their certificates without their physical presence in the pharmacy outlet is liable for action.
Further, KSPC has collaborated with pharmacy colleges offering B Pharm courses in Karnataka to improve the employability of pharmacy students. Programs have been designed to provide students with relevant skills to be industry-ready, including training on Good Manufacturing Practices, equipment operation, regulatory compliance, and quality control.
