In a significant step towards strengthening laboratory management practices across the country, the Division of Cytopathology at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), in collaboration with the Department of Pathology, North DMC Medical College and Hindu Rao Hospital, Delhi, is launching the Department of Health Research (DHR) sponsored NICPR-ECHO Online Course on Clinical Laboratory Management.
The course will be conducted from April 17 to May 8, 2025. It aims to empower laboratory professionals with advanced management skills essential for efficient clinical lab operations.
Clinical laboratories are the cornerstone of diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in modern medicine. Recognizing the need for robust managerial capabilities, this course addresses key components such as general administration, operations, quality control, and human resource management. Efficient lab management is directly linked to improved healthcare delivery and enhanced patient satisfaction.

The session on Introduction to the Course & Learning Objectives by Dr. Shalini Singh & Dr. Ruchika Gupta will set the stage by outlining the course objectives, structure, expectations, and outcomes. It introduces participants to the essential role of management in clinical laboratories and emphasizes why structured lab operations are critical to healthcare systems.
Other topics include Risk Management in Clinical Laboratories. Risk management involves identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential errors or failures in lab processes—ranging from diagnostic inaccuracies to biohazard exposure. This session will focus on building a culture of safety and compliance in labs, with strategies for risk assessment and incident reporting systems.
Management Tools in Laboratory Settings - This module introduces essential managerial tools and techniques such as SWOT analysis, Lean Six Sigma, and the Balanced Scorecard—enabling participants to improve lab workflow, eliminate inefficiencies, and drive continuous improvement.
The session on Capacity Management explores how to match lab resources with fluctuating workloads without compromising turnaround times or quality. Topics include staffing optimization, workload analysis, and space planning.
The session on Inventory Management will talk about efficient stock control ensures uninterrupted operations and cost efficiency. This module will discuss inventory tracking systems, reorder levels, expiry management, and automation tools that help maintain a lean yet responsive inventory system.
The session on Equipment Management will give insights on effective equipment management is crucial for ensuring accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance. This session covers equipment lifecycle management—from procurement and installation to calibration, maintenance, and disposal.
Strategic Human Resource Management session will explore how to attract, develop, and retain skilled laboratory personnel. Topics include organizational behaviour, performance appraisal, motivation, leadership, and training strategies tailored to lab environments.
Other topics include Recruitment and Selection in Clinical Labs, Human Resource Planning & Development, Internal Quality Control (IQC), External Quality Control (EQC), Laboratory Accreditation and Biomedical Waste Management in Clinical Laboratories.
Proper handling and disposal of biomedical waste is essential to prevent contamination and legal violations. This session outlines government regulations, segregation techniques, color-coded disposal systems, and eco-friendly alternatives.
