CRSIC concludes 23rd International Symposium in Mumbai with discussions on business potential of new drug delivery systems

Controlled Release Society - Indian Chapter (CRSIC) recently concluded its flagship event 23rd International Symposium in Mumbai. The theme of the symposium was “Advances in Technology and Business Potential of New Drug Delivery Systems”. A total of 450 delegates from across the country participated in the symposium of whom 80% were from academia including students and faculty and 20% were from the pharma and allied industry.
 
Around 181 e-posters were presented over the two-day symposium as part of the Go Green Initiative.  As a part of this drive, each invited speaker at the symposium was presented with a “Go Green Certificate” and a tree planted in honour of the speaker.  The trees would be the epitome of the ever-lasting bond between the speakers and the CRSIC.
 
The symposium started with homage to Professor H. L. Bhalla, the founder president of CRSIC. Post welcome address, presidential address was given by the president of the local chapter Dr. Vandana Patravale. 
 
Aditi Kare Panandikar, managing director, Indoco Remedies Limited was chief guest of the inaugural function. Dr. Bruno Sarmento, secretary, Controlled Release Society Inc. was the guest of honour of the inaugural function. Aditi Kare Panandikar was felicitated and invited to give the inaugural address. She gave an impactful keynote address sharing valuable research insights on translational aspects of novel drug delivery systems. She highlighted the need of taking into consideration the patient's need while developing novel technology. The newsletter and e-abstract book were released at the hands of the dignitaries.
 
Dr. John D’souza briefed the delegates about the contents of the abstract book. Dr. Patravale further informed the audience about the Lifetime Achievement Award instituted by CRSIC. This year Dr. Himadri Sen was declared as the recipient of this award. Dr. Bruno Sarmento, secretary, Controlled Release Society Inc. delivered his inaugural address.  The Inauguration function ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Sujata Sawarkar, secretary, CRSIC
 
This year there were 12 invited speakers in the technical sessions.  Dr. Bruno Sarmento, University of Porto Portugal, Dr. Prabhat Ranjan Mishra, Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, Dr. Sahadev Shankarappa Ramaiah, University of Applied Sciences, Bengaluru, Dr. Benjamin Winkeljann Ludwig Maximillans, University Munich, Germany, Dr. Ashish Kulkarni, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA and Dr. Daniel Ruiz Molina, Catalian Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Barcelona, Spain were invited speakers on day 1. We also had Tech Showcase presentations from Merck, DSM Firmenich, Aptar, Croda and Electrolab.
 
Day 2 of the symposium was coordinated by Dr. Madhur Kulkarni, Treasurer CRSIC. The speakers for day two included Dr. Sofia Barros University of Porto Portugal, Dr. Samir Haddouchi, Sotax Pharma Sciences, Orleans, France, Dr. Mark Plankett, Fuji Chemicals, Sweden, Dr. Madhu Bhaskaran, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia, Dr. SumanBose, University of Massachusetts Minnesota, USA, and Dr. Vandana Patravale, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai.
 
This year CRSIC organized a panel discussion involving participation of eminent industry professionals. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Parizad Elchidana, principal technical consultant, Pharma ACG Worldwide and Immediate Past President CRSIC. The panellists included Dr. Kavita Inamdar, chief technical officer, Indoco Remedies Ltd., Dr. RituLaddha senior vice president and cluster head Zydus Lifesciences Ltd., Dr. SajeevChandran, vice president, Pharmaceutical R&D (Oral/Ophthal/ Derm) Lupin Ltd., Dr. Ganesh Jadhav, senior general manager, Product Innovation, Sun Pharma. The panel discussion was interactive and participants shared their translational experiences while launching novel drug delivery systems in the market.
 
The symposium had table exhibits by Sotax India Ltd., Trident India Ltd., Electrolab Ltd, ACG Worldwide, Aptar Ltd. and Nitika Pharma
 
CRSIC had the privilege of hosting Ajit Singh, chairman, ACG Worldwide as Chief Guest of valedictory function. Ajit Singh highlighted the need of prominent industry academia interaction to translate novel dosage forms from laboratory to clinic. Ajit Singh congratulated CRSIC for organizing an outstanding symposium.
 
The young research students were overwhelmed to receive Prof. H. L. Bhalla Young Scientist Award, prizes for poster presentation from Ajit Singh. This year Prof. H. L. Bhalla Young Scientist 2025 award was presented to Sonia Guha of BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus. She presented a research paper entitled, Development and evaluation of a novel delivery strategy for CRISPR - CAS components for treatment of corneal dystrophy. Sreejith Thrivikraman of Amrita School of Pharmacy, Kochi received first prize for his paper entitled Controlled Release Strategy using Partial Molecular Imprinting In PVA-based Embolizing Agents for Anticancer Therapy.
 
The second prize was conferred to Jhanvi Thakur of SVKM’s Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Pharmacy (BNCP), Mumbai for her poster entitled Formulation and Evaluation of Ezetimibe Effervescent Granules for management of Parkinson's disease. There was a tie for third prize. Third prize was bagged by two research students Akanksha Soman of VES College of Pharmacy, Mumbai for her poster Development of Microneedle Patches for enhanced Transdermal delivery of Vitamin D3 in pediatric populations and Ankita Yawalkar of Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai for her poster entitled Posaconazole Thermosomes - a promising therapeutic system for invasive fungal infections
 
The symposium ended with a vote of thanks to all the sponsors, organizing committee members, event supporters and student volunteers.
