TN APTI to start orientation course for beginner teachers from January 2025

Peethaambaran Kunnathoor, Chennai
Thursday, January 2, 2025, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

From 2025 onwards, all the pharmacy colleges in Tamil Nadu will have trained academicians unlike in previous years as the state branch of the pharmacy teachers association of India (TN APTI) is gearing up for introducing the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) from next month.

The FDP is like a training programme for orientation in teaching theory and practice of the pharmacy course. This is part of increasing the quality of pharmacy education imparted by the Tamil Nadu based pharmacy colleges, an association source informed.

According to the source, the beginner teachers will be trained in pedagogy course lasting for five days to educate them how to teach the lessons to the students, how to effectively manage a class, how to analyze the feedbacks, how to use IT tools in education, how to encourage students to learn and how to motivate on innovative ideas.

“A comprehensive training course for the beginner teachers will be introduced from January onwards, and it will be conducted in a phased manner. The training programme is conducted by the state pharmacy teachers’ association in association with each pharmacy college. This is the first phase of the training programme which will be conducted for the budding teachers of all the institutions. At first, we are coordinating with Erode College of Pharmacy (ECP) at Erode, and the training course will start from January 29 onwards. Teachers from pharmacy colleges in the west zone of the association will be invited to the training programme. Although this is meant for the beginner teachers, teachers with experience of less than five years will be included. In the west zone, there are 30 pharmacy colleges, and the number of beginner teachers comes around 60”, said Dr V Sankar, president of the TN APTI.

Talking to Pharmabiz, he said the training programme will have two levels as Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 will be held this year zone wise. No teacher will be allowed to continue to work without attending the FDP. In olden days, he said, there were training programmes organised by Pharmacy Council of India for the teachers on how to handle classes. The same curriculum is revised here. The beginners in the profession are the budding teachers and they get into the profession soon after their graduation or post-graduation is over. Unlike in other courses, pharmacy teachers do not have any kind of training in teaching. This is a lacuna and it affects the quality of the education. Once this programme is implemented in Tamil Nadu, other state branches of the APTI will take it up in their respective states. Gradually, teachers’ training programmes will become part of pharmacy education in India.

To a question about the trainers, Dr Sankar said well-experienced professors with more than 30 years in service will be the trainers. They will be selected not only from the private sector but also from the government institutions. About this training programme, APTI has written to the Pharmacy Council of India for guidance.

The participants will be provided with accommodation and food by collecting a nominal fee of Rs. 2,000 for five days. The programme coordinator is the principal of the Erode College of Pharmacy, Dr R Sampath Kumar, who is also the secretary of the APTI, Tamil Nadu branch.
