The Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subrahmanian has said the government will soon increase the number of pharmacy degree (B Pharm and M Pharm) colleges in the government sector, and consider to take up the demand of starting Pharm D program in government institutions with the state government.

He has also promised that steps will be taken with the central government for establishing one National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Madurai.

The minister was speaking at a seminar on ‘Current Trends in Pharmaceuticals’, organized by The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University in association with Tamil Nadu branch of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (TN IPA).

Currently, only two government institutions in the state run the pharmacy UG and PG courses, one in Chennai and another one in Madurai. The two diploma colleges (D Pharm) are attached to the government medical colleges in Tanjore and in Coimbatore. Whereas in the private sector, there are 90 degree colleges at present.

Various associations of students, teachers and pharmacy professionals including IPA have been demanding to the government for years to increase the number of degree colleges under government sector as well as to start the doctoral pharmacy course, Pharm D, for the benefit of the poor students in Tamil Nadu. It is learnt that the government diploma colleges in Tanjore and Coimbatore will be promoted to degree colleges from next academic year onwards.

The health minister said he is proud of the Tamil Nadu pharma industry as it contributes a lion portion of the exports of medicines to foreign countries from India. He said although India is popularly known as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’, Tamil Nadu is going to be the Health Capital of India. He further said all the vacant posts of pharmacists in the health sector have been filled up recently, and the government is going to launch the ‘Muthalvar Marunthagam’, the government-sponsored generic shops from January 12 onwards. These pharmacies will ensure the availability of 220 generic medicines.

The meeting was attended by the vice-chancellor of the university Dr K Narayanaswami, TN IPA president Dr S Manivannan and J Jayaseelan who is also the chairman of the TN IDMA.

After the inaugural function three technical sessions were conducted, the first one was on ‘Artificial Intelligence Transferring Pharmaceutical Industry’ and the speaker was Dr. Duraiswamy Rajan Palani, founder and CEO of ‘Archimedes Digital’.

NG Badari Narayanan spoke on ‘Regulation and Opportunities in Medical Devices’, and Dr. Ilavarasan, former assistant director of the ‘Captain Srinivasa Murthy Central Ayurveda Research Institute’ in Chennai delivered a talk on ‘Current Technological Development of Ayush Drugs’.
