NABL announces major overhaul with accreditation validity extended to 4 years for testing labs

The National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) has introduced a series of reforms aimed at streamlining its accreditation processes and reducing operational challenges for testing laboratories. These reforms include significant changes to the accreditation cycle, surveillance methods, and application timelines.

Key Updates in NABL Accreditation Policy include the validity of NABL accreditation certificates will increase from 2 years to 4 years. This extension applies to certificates issued on or after the implementation date.

To maintain quality assurance during the extended cycle, NABL will conduct on-site assessments of accredited laboratories to ensure continuous compliance with NABL standards. Reassessment will be done every 2 years. The comprehensive reassessment will be conducted midway through the accreditation cycle to ensure adherence to standards.

This shift aims to reduce administrative burden while maintaining rigorous quality control measures.

NABL has introduced Desktop Surveillance for labs with 10+ years of accreditation. Laboratories with an uninterrupted accreditation record of over 10 years are now eligible for desktop surveillance assessments instead of on-site visits.

This policy change recognizes the consistent track record of long-standing accredited laboratories and reduces disruptions caused by physical assessments.

To assist laboratories with seamless accreditation continuity, NABL will now offer a three-month extension of accreditation for laboratories that apply for renewal within the stipulated time frame. Labs will now complete a one-day verification assessment as part of the extension process. This provision ensures that laboratories maintain accreditation status without interruptions, provided they adhere to renewal timelines.

These measures are part of NABL’s ongoing efforts to enhance the accreditation system and foster a more efficient and supportive environment for laboratories. The extended validity period, streamlined surveillance for long-standing labs, and flexibility in renewal applications are expected to significantly benefit accredited entities.

“For further information and detailed guidelines, stakeholders are encouraged to visit NABL's official website or contact the accreditation board directly,” according to NABL.
