Even as the work for the infrastructure development is progressing at the site of the proposed pharma park at Karasur in Pondicherry, the drug manufacturers association in the Union territory (PDMA) has given a proposal to the government stating that 50 pharmaceutical companies from the territory are ready to invest in the park project. The Pondicherry Drug Manufacturers Association (PDMA) has assured the government a total investment of Rs. 500 crore in the project by companies from various states. In the letter given to the government, the association has mentioned the names of 25 companies who are willing to invest in, and quoted expressions of interest of another 25 companies. Apart from companies located in Pondicherry, formulation and API manufacturers from all parts of the country have expressed their willingness to invest in the project. PDMA has given certain names of the companies, who are interested, from Rajasthan, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to the government. The government has already identified 200 acres of land at Karasur Industrial Estate for the proposed pharma park, and allotted it to the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) for developing infrastructure facilities. PIPDIC is developing the Karasur and Sederapet Industrial Estates. It is expected that the government of Pondicherry will soon make the official announcement about the establishment of the park, it is learnt. According to E Srinivasan, general secretary of PDMA, the park project will draw a total investment of Rs. 500 crore, and create tremendous job opportunities. He said the association has appealed to the government to speed up the work of the ongoing infrastructure development, and it is expected that the work will be completed in another six months. Approvals of Pondicherry Planning Authority, Pollution Control Board, Electricity Board, Water Supply Department, Fire Service, Health Department, Industry Department, Labor Department and the local bodies need to be obtained to start the work of the project. Besides giving job opportunities to 20,000 persons directly and indirectly by this project, in and around the pharma park site, several other industries will also come up. Companies to manufacture and market foils, cartons, printing, shipper service, and transport and food will grow at an enormous rate. Srinivasan said this pharma park will help Pondicherry’s economic and employment development.
