Studies of Ayush-ICMR centres will produce national dossiers for global marketing of Ayush formulations: Dr Kotecha

The Union Ayush Ministry’s collaborations with leading institutions like Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will strengthen the scientific foundations of Ayush therapies and promote their acceptance worldwide.

All the initiatives under the collaborations are designed to expand the acceptance and scientific validation of Ayush practices globally. With this purpose in view, the ministry has established Ayush-ICMR centers in four AIIMS campuses, Delhi, Jodhpur, Nagpur and Rishikesh, which prioritize conducting mechanistic studies (experiments to investigate how molecules interact and react with each other) to explain integrative medicine approaches scientifically. The result will produce national dossiers for global marketing of Ayush formulations, according to Dr. Rajesh Kotecha, secretary of the Union Ayush Ministry.

The secretary said this in his replies to e-mail queries from Pharmabiz. According to him, studies on the gut microbiome reveal new insights into how Ayurveda therapies impact health at the microbiological level. Specific botanicals, Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Shallaki, Shunthi and Methika, are undergoing preclinical trials in GLP facilities to produce national dossiers.

He said the Ayush-ICMR centres are focusing on priority areas such as gastrointestinal health, women and child health, cancer care and geriatric health. These centers will facilitate high-quality clinical trials using integrative therapies that combine traditional and modern medical approaches. Further, they will develop protocols and guidelines for cross-referrals and integrated care aimed at improving patient outcomes and providing robust evidence on Ayush effectiveness for wider acceptance.

Another initiative for evidence-based study, the Ayush ministry has signed an MoU with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to facilitate mutual cooperation to enhance evidence-based Ayush interventions through biotechnological research. This partnership enables both sectors to leverage biotechnology in a variety of ways, such as understanding how Rasayana (rejuvenative) therapies impact health and longevity, known as "Vayahsthaapana Rasayana," aimed at reducing chronic disease morbidity and improving quality of life. Key research areas include chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, osteoarthritis, cachexia, pain management, and infectious diseases like tuberculosis. The integration of Ayush practices with biotechnology offers innovative approaches to address these conditions comprehensively.

Recognizing the value of Ayurveda principles when integrated with modern sciences, the Ayurveda Biology Integrated Health Research (ABIHR) programme has been introduced, which offers a robust framework for exploring Ayurveda through molecular biology, immunology, and pharmacology. Courses like Ayurveda Biology at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and its inclusion as a subject in the UGC-NET exam underscores the modernization and internationalization of Ayush research.

For upgrading the facilities and functions of institutions, the ministry has introduced a scheme, Centre of Excellence, which aims to integrate traditional practices into modern research frameworks. For example, the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in New Delhi explores the genetic aspects of Ayurveda Prakriti, while partnerships with institutions like NIMHANS investigate integrative treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders. Other studies, such as those at AIIMS on Yoga for migraine, validate Ayush’s role in diverse health conditions.

The Ministry has collaborated with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to research Ayush interventions for managing long Covid, an area with pressing global relevance. Studies on Ashwagandha have also been undertaken internationally, providing evidence for its effectiveness in various therapeutic contexts. All these initiatives are designed to expand the acceptance and scientific validation of Ayush practices globally.

Dr Kotecha said, through these initiatives, the Ministry of Ayush is building a robust, evidence-based platform that utilizes modern scientific methods, thereby reinforcing the credibility of Ayush systems in line with government policy. This approach seeks to bridge traditional and contemporary healthcare, creating a more integrated, accessible and patient-centered healthcare system for India.
