The Union Ministry of Ayush (MoA) is working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop an International Herbal Pharmacopoeia (IHP) to set global quality and efficacy standards for Ayush products.

This will help address the challenges currently faced by the ayurvedic drug manufacturers for exporting the traditional medicines to foreign countries, said Dr. Rajesh Kotecha, secretary of the Ayush Ministry.

Further to this, he said, the ministry is now engaged in developing a supportive ecosystem for the international growth of Ayush products and services. This involves strengthening collaborations with various countries for joint research and establishing evidence-based standards. According to him, now-a-days there is a significant international demand for Ayush-based nutraceuticals, prescription products and services.

He said, through streamlined regulatory guidelines, quality assurance and expanded clinical research, the Ayush Ministry is ensuring that Ayush products and services meet international benchmarks, fostering wider acceptance and access worldwide. In the last ten years, India witnessed a remarkable growth of Ayush products and services.

Dr Kotecha was speaking to Pharmabiz on the sidelines of the 61st Ayurveda Conference hosted by the Kottakkal Aryavaidyasala in Malappuram in Kerala, last week.

“According to a 2020 study by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries, the size of the Ayush manufacturing industry has been estimated at Rs. 1,37,800 crore (USD 18.1 billion), marking a six-fold increase over the past seven years. Moreover, the Ayush market has demonstrated remarkable growth, expanding from USD 2.85 billion in 2014 to an estimated USD 23 billion in 2024, an impressive eight-fold rise. This growth underscores the increasing global demand for traditional Indian wellness products,” he told Pharmabiz.

Currently, Ayush products are being exported to 150 countries across the globe. The export of Ayush products reached a substantial level with 1.54 billion dollars in 2020 for medicines and extracts alone. Whereas, in 2021-2022 the export of Ayush and herbal products reached 612.1 million dollars and in 2022-23 it stood at 628.25 million dollars. In 2023-24, the country’s export of Ayush and herbal products reported a growth rate of 3.6 per cent, registering 651.17 million dollars.

Pointing to further boost for exports, Dr. Kotecha said, the Ayush ministry, with the support from the Ministry of Commerce (MoC), Government of India, has established the Ayush Export Promotion Council (Ayushexcil) for the promotion and exports of Ayush products to foreign markets. It is aimed to oversee exports of products of Ayush systems and address trade issues pertaining to these sectors. Till date, 19 product descriptions related to various systems of Ayush have been allocated to Ayushexcil.

To a question regarding challenges for collection, storage and standardization of raw materials faced by the manufacturers, the Ayush secretary said there are rules and regulations to be followed by the manufacturers for collection and use of raw drugs. The Schedule T of the Drug Rules 1945 has provisions related to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani drugs. This GMP stipulates guidelines for the collection and storage of raw materials used in the manufacturing of Ayush medicines. Further, there is the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) with a mandate to develop pharmacopoeial standards for Ayush medicines. And, there is one Central Sector Scheme (CSS) under the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) for the conservation, development and sustainable management of medicinal plants used in Ayush systems.
