The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued a call for proposals for its Centre for Advanced Research (CAR) initiative under the Extramural Research Programme, inviting experienced research teams to apply for funding aimed at advancing healthcare research in critical areas. This initiative seeks to establish dedicated CAR centers that will conduct research to address pressing healthcare issues and develop evidence-based solutions.
The CAR initiative represents an opportunity for top researchers in India to contribute to transformative healthcare solutions.
Applications can only be submitted online by a Principal Investigator (PI) affiliated with an eligible medical or research institution. The PI must ensure their research team has the necessary skills and track record. The application window opens on September 19, 2024, and the deadline for submission is November 21, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. Proposals must include a co-Principal Investigator from the PI’s institution.
The CAR centers are intended to support in-depth, high-impact research projects. Each center will conduct one or multiple linked projects with clearly defined goals, focusing on the causation, progression, management, and prevention of critical health conditions. By enabling advanced research, the programme aims to generate innovative solutions and knowledge across multiple healthcare challenges.
Research teams focusing on certain high-priority diseases will be given preference. The selected research topics span several critical categories like communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, reproductive, maternal, and child health - studies may address conditions such as anemia, malnutrition, neonatal mortality, congenital anomalies, and various maternal health concerns. Overarching themes includes aging and disabilities, oral health, and climate-related health impacts.
ICMR will fund projects with budgets ranging from Rs. 8 crore to under Rs. 15 crore, with a maximum duration of five years. Research teams with strong expertise and infrastructure to conduct high-quality research are encouraged to apply. Upon project completion, host institutions will take over the CAR’s activities to ensure sustained impact.
