The Department of Health Research (DHR) under the ministry of health & family welfare, Government of India, is calling for applications from Indian scientists for short-term and long-term international fellowships for 2024-25.

As part of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-DHR International Fellowship Programme, these fellowships aim to equip Indian researchers with advanced skills by providing them with the opportunity to engage with global experts in clinical medicine and health sciences.

This initiative seeks to foster a robust cohort of health researchers, contributing to India's scientific progress in alignment with global standards.

Programme highlights include 15 Short-Term Fellowships (2 weeks to 3 months). The eligibility for the same is Scientists under 57 years with 10-15 years of experience in teaching or research in a recognized institute. It also includes 15 Long-Term Fellowships (6 to 12 months). Eligibility for the same includes Scientists below 45 years with a minimum of 3 years in teaching or research.

Global Institutions Collaborating for the Fellowship Programme Applicants may pursue placements at leading institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, University of Melbourne, King's College London, and NYU Grossman School of Medicine, among others. They may also approach other prestigious universities for training and mentorship.

ICMR has also always been leading in developing ethical standards for human research in the country. The ICMR ethical guidelines for research have been revised which were last brought out in 2006. These guidelines are well recognized in India and a number of other countries also.

Changes in biomedical health research and its environment have been very rapid in recent times. In India with its diverse population, it is very important to be sensitive to the needs and requirements for advances in medicine, while providing adequate protection to the vulnerable population. Medical research is the need of the hour and therefore it is important not only to be responsive to emerging issues but to also build greater trust towards research. The revised guidelines are not only an update of the existing 2006 guideline but also address newer concerns, in accordance with the socio-cultural milieu of our country. For the first time, the guidelines have addressed concerns in subject areas where there is scanty guidance available such as public health research, socio behavioural research, conducting research during disasters or emergencies, dealing with vulnerable populations or conducting collaborative research.
