The vice-chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Dr K Narayanaswami has informed Pharmabiz that the university will soon set up two Advanced Research Laboratories for research and development (R&D) in Madras and Coimbatore Medical Colleges to enable students of medical sciences, life sciences and pharmaceutical sciences to collaborate with faculty and researchers on research projects and learn research methodology at an early stage of their course study.

These facilities will provide opportunities for the faculty and the pharmacy students of all the 94 affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu to gain knowledge about R&D, create a research culture even during their study, and build capacities in research, innovation and development.

The establishment of these two R&D centres, in Madras Medical College and in Coimbatore Medical College, is mainly to foster an industry-institution collaboration for strengthening the pharmacy academic sector. The university wants to introduce the students of pharmacy to the industry at an early stage. Students of the first year, second year and third year of the B Pharm will get chances to learn about the needs of the industry during their study, so that they can make decisions about future careers accordingly. The university will start the preliminary work of the R&D centres in another two months, said the vice chancellor.

The vice-chancellor was speaking to Pharmabiz after attending a meeting of pharma industry doyens and pharmacy academicians at the university, called by him to promote an industry-academia tie-up. He said the collaboration will create a win-win scenario for both industry and academia. Dr. Narayanaswami’s decision to establish the R&D Centres aligns well with the goals outlined in the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes a policy of education to create a knowledge driven society.

“Industry exposure is significant for the students to gain practical knowledge and skill development. It will provide them a clear insight into the structure of the industries and their departmental functions. So, we want to introduce the students of pharmacy to the industry at an early stage. They should know the requirements of the industry from the beginning of their study, further they will be taken to the R&D to know more about research and analysis. Manufacturing and R&D are the two major areas of the drug industry. The industry wants to absorb students, for which the university is creating opportunities. If the industry faces difficulties in any stage of a drug production, the academicians can help them to resolve the issue, even in the development of a new drug. So, the industry-academia collaboration is mutually helpful,” the VC said.

He said the discussions in the meeting were very fruitful and considering the need of the industry, the curriculum would be modified with additional inputs in line with industry requirements. The meeting was attended by 90 principals, and representing the drug manufacturers association (IDMA) of Tamil Nadu, 12 industry representatives, in addition to HoDs of pharmacy departments and student coordinators.

The industry representatives were led by the TN IDMA chairman, J Jayaseelan. He said experts from API industries, Ayush industries and formulations industries attended the meeting along with the EC members of the IDMA. The association affirmed in the meeting that they will train the faculty first in their facilities and later on three months training will be given to the students on segment wise. Upon finishing the training, a student will become a full-fledged pharmacist with entrepreneurial talent. He said this collaboration between industry and institutions will bridge the gap between theoretical and practical learning, and help the students to prepare for their future choices.
