The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has requested all institutions, universities, boards related to pharmacy education and the State Pharmacy Councils to register with the National Academic Depository (NAD)/Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), in line with the advice of the concerned Cell.

Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, it is mandatory for all the academic institutions to register on NAD/ABC portal and for all the students to create their ABC ID so that they can avail the facility.

ABC provides a facility to open a unique/individual ABC account in digital form with a unique ID. The major functions of ABC are registration of higher education institutions (HEIs) under the ABC Scheme and opening, closure and validation of academic accounts of students, credit verification, credit accumulation, credit transfer/redemption of students, and also promotion of the ABC among the stakeholders.

The NAD/ABC Cell has earlier issued step-by-step guides for academic institutions and students in order to make the process of registration easy and to address the technical problems in the registration process.

The ministry of education says that Academic Bank of Credits has been established on the lines of the National Academic Depository (NAD), in the sense, NAD is the backbone of ABC, where the students' academic data are held and academic awards are stored (i.e. storehouse of academic awards).

The issuance of ABC lDs assigns a distinct and permanent identifier to each student, commencing from Class l. This ensures seamless academic tracking throughout their educational journey. It facilitates continuous and comprehensive monitoring of students' academic performance from the outset.

Educators have the ability to pinpoint subject-specific areas where students may benefit from additional support based on their academic data linked to ABC lDs, enabling targeted interventions for improvement.

It will also help the institutions to streamline record keeping, providing a secure and organised repository for student's academic records. It also provides the students the freedom to multiple entry, multiple exit in their educational programme, fostering personalised learning journey, said the Cell.

Student credits are securely preserved for a maximum of seven years, ensuring that their academic achievements remain accessible and relevant throughout their career. The system also offers a single-window platform for the seamless transfer of credits, simplifying the process after the approval of both the sending and receiving academic institutions.

Only verified academic institutions are authorised to upload credits.

Despite the fact that ABC enables students to register or commence credit transfer, the final outcomes of credit redemption and issuance of certificates, as well as the compilation of award records, are administered by academic institutions via the NAD Platform. Hence being the owner of academic awards, Academic Institutions must mandatorily register themselves under ABC via NAD.

The PCI has also shared the step-by-step user guide for use of multiple channels to create ABC ID for academic institutions.

The guide encompasses the entire process of generating ABC lDs for students through a range of channels, including academic institution portals, DigiLocker, UMANG, the Academic Bank of Credits portal, and the Ministry's UIDSE+ mode for bulk lD creation. Furthermore, it delineates the procedures for academic institutions to undertake bulk creation of student ABC lDs, leveraging the NAD and dedicated APls.

Academic institutions are equipped with two distinct options for creating ABC lDs in bulk. They can opt for the National Academic Depository, a specialized portal dedicated to managing academic records, for bulk lD generation. Alternatively, they can leverage dedicated APls designed for facilitating the creation of bulk ABC IDs

So far 31.27 crore students and learners have registered with the ABC, while a total number of 2,194 academic institutions registered and 879 uploaded credit data from 2021 to 2023. A total of 1.47 crore academic records with credit data mapped with Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) - which is a specialized identification system designed for all students in India - identification document.
