India and Germany are poised to advance translational research in mental health, pain management, and palliative care. Here NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences) and Heidelberg University, Germany have fostered scientific partnerships in neurosciences with a mission to explore opportunities. This aims to leverage each country's strengths to develop effective solutions and improve patient outcomes. Through partnerships between leading institutions, both nations are committed to addressing pressing health challenges.

A high-level ten-member delegation from Heidelberg University, Germany visited NIMHANS to identify significant potential for translational research in areas such as mental health, pain management, and palliative care. Heidelberg is not only the oldest university in today's Germany but also one of the world’s leading research institutions. With a mission to expand its internationalisation and commitment to India, a strong ten-member delegation led by the Prof. Dr. Marc-Philippe Weller, vice president of Heidelberg University was at NIMHANs to set up Indo-German projects that will mutually benefit both Germany and India.

The key focus areas of there is to actively engage with the Centre for Brain Research, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru that conducts which focuses on on neurodegenerative disorders of the aging brain and age-associated brain disorders.

The highlight of the visit was the Heidelberg Lecture that was delivered in cooperation with The German Consulate Bengaluru and NIMHANS, Bengaluru by the Indian origin neuroscientist and recipient of the Leibniz Award 2024, Prof. Dr. Rohini Kuner. She won the award for her pioneering work on the mechanisms underlying chronic pain. She leads the largest consortium for pain in the world. Kuner has received a number of important research prizes, including an ERC Advanced Grant.

Dr. Pratima Murthy, director, NIMHANS, described the visit of the delegation from Heidelberg University as a crucial step in strengthening international collaborations in mental health and neurosciences. She emphasized the potential for translational research in areas such as mental health, pain management, palliative care, dementia, and neuromodulation.

Dr Murthy highlighted the importance of training and joint academic initiatives, including fellowship programs and opportunities for PhD and physician scientists, to explore these collaborative possibilities together.

Prof Dr Marc-Philippe Weller, vice president international affairs, Heidelberg University said “Heidelberg University has a special India focus. It opens up new perspectives specifically in life sciences, natural sciences, neuroscience and mental health. Further, it opens gateways for fostering Academia-Industry partnerships with state-of-the art institutions such as NIMHANS and Centre for Brain Research.”

Achim Burkart, Consul General, Federal Republic of Germany in Bengaluru, emphasized the significant partnership between the two countries in higher education and research, noting that nearly 50,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in German universities, and highlighted the potential for collaboration and innovation between the two countries.

Prof Dr Rohini Kuner, director, department of molecular pharmacology, Heidelberg Medical Faculty, Heidelberg University stated, “The research in the area of pain management which requires a multidisciplinary team of experts to develop effective interventions and collaboration with NIMHANS is highly relevant for undertaking such initiatives and also aid both countries in linking fundamental and translational research practices."
