The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) has introduced a new certification programme for Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems. The certification programme offers two maturity levels—Basic and Advanced—and will be valid for two years. Registrations for HIS/EMR systems seeking certification will begin on December 1, 2024, via the NABH portal.

These standards, now available for free on the NABH website, are designed to standardize HIS and EMR products, ensuring that they align with both clinical standards and the National Health Authority’s (NHA) Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) platform. NABH now offers fully aligned standards for hospitals and digital health systems, creating a comprehensive framework for healthcare providers.

To ensure smooth registration, applicants are advised to have essential documents ready, including ABDM certification (M1, M2, M3), WASA certification, and optionally, ISO certification.

The announcement, titled "NABH/Gen/2024/7171," follows the official launch of the NABH Standards for HIS/EMR during the National Patient Safety Conference on September 17, 2024.

Dr Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO of NABH, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “With the launch of these standards, NABH has acquired the unique distinction of having clinical standards for hospitals, digital health standards for hospitals, and standards for HIS/EMR products, all fully aligned. This will contribute to building a transparent, efficient, and interoperable digital healthcare infrastructure in the country.”

Dr Kochhar highlighted the importance of the new standards in enhancing healthcare services. “Adhering to these newly established standards will not only strengthen your product’s market position but will also significantly contribute to the overall improvement of healthcare services,” he added.

The NABH website will soon provide detailed guidelines and resources to help HIS/EMR providers understand and comply with the new standards. Interested parties are encouraged to prepare for the registration process and visit the official NABH website for further updates or contact dh2support@nabh.co for assistance.
