Hospitals designing with AI and data-driven insights aid patients and operational efficiency

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into hospital design enhances the physical space which has a positive impact on patient outcomes and operational efficiency. With data-driven insights, hospitals create spaces that are not just utilitarian but truly therapeutic.

According to Ravideep Singh, associate director, Creative Designer Architects, efficiency and comfort are the future of hospital design. AI-assisted architecture goes beyond aesthetics creating an environment that reduces stress, aids the healing process.

Further, AI in healthcare design offers the application of predictive maintenance. This maximises data from various sensors, including occupancy and daylight sensors, integrated with a centralised Building Management System (BMS) to enhance energy efficiency and prolong the lifespan of critical healthcare infrastructure, he added.

AI algorithms, equipped to process vast datasets, unearth critical insights into the needs and preferences of patients. This invaluable intelligence empowers architects to craft spaces that are not merely functional, but have therapeutic attributes, stated Singh.

The role of AI in healthcare planning and design, along with the inclusion of digital interfaces, is carefully instilled along the patient journey expediting healing physiologically and psychologically. The intersection of AI with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) creates more responsive patient environments, offering opportunities for innovative hospital design. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is crucial in patient interactions. Chatbots, powered by AI and NLP, can engage with patients, answer queries, and provide relevant information in a conversational manner, thereby reducing the burden on healthcare staff and ensuring consistent communication. It eases patient concerns but also allows healthcare providers to gather insights into patient preferences, Singh told Pharmabiz in an email.

Technology improves energy efficiency, reducing costs while ensuring critical healthcare systems remain operational. It prevents unexpected breakdowns, which is crucial in healthcare where downtime can be life-threatening, he noted.

Employing Big Data and AI will allow healthcare professionals and designers to comprehend patterns out of the already existing patient profiles and use them to create dynamic design layouts for hospitals that are reconfigurable. For example, cellular hospitals will soon be a more prevalent sight as compared to departmentalised hospitals. A cellular hospital will consist of a typical singular arrangement that would treat multiple ailments in one place. Instead of running around different departments, patients will be able to avail themselves of the treatments in one place, said Singh.

Models such as telemedicine and cellular hospitals will drive healthcare design toward a digital future and a sustainable one, where the strain on hospital infrastructure and running costs will lessen drastically.

Research has underscored patient experience can be improved by providing attention to the placement of windows to harness maximum natural light. Here AI can guide architects to create the required spaces that prioritise patient privacy and comfort, indispensable to foster recovery, he said.

Technology's influence goes beyond the drawing board and extends into the foundations of hospitals. Architects and engineers now can opt for these tools for seamless collaboration and pre-emptive problem-solving. This synergy mitigates potential pitfalls and errors, resulting in more efficient and cost-effective construction, he said,

Integrating technology into hospital architecture is a convergence of meticulous data analysis and provides an empathy to healthcare design. It paves the way for a new era in hospital architecture, said Singh.
