Principal writes to UGC seeking direction to universities to conduct FDPs on modern teaching methods

The pharmacy institutions in India have increased manifold in the last one decade, and the number of teachers and students has also increased alike. But the quality of pharmacy education and the pattern of teaching have not so developed as compared to the growth in the number of colleges, teachers and students, opines Dr. Rajat Kumar Kar, pharmacy education visionary and principal of the Dadhichi College of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Cuttack in Odisha.

After forwarding a suggestion to the University Grants Commission (UGC), the higher education regulator in the country, seeking direction to all the universities and the institutions to initiate steps like faculty development programmes (FDPs) to make as mandatory provisions to increase the teaching capacities of the pedagogues, he said the ongoing training programmes are not matching with the new National Education Policy 2020 which aims to transform India into a knowledge society by providing high-tech quality education to the students.

According to him, it is the duty of the universities to conduct the training programmes for the faculty members. The UGC is providing financial aid to both the universities and to the institutions for conducting various training programmes.

Talking about his suggestions to the UGC, he said there are faculty development programmes being conducted by institutions at present, but they are not suitable to fulfill the requirements for coping with the development in science and technology. The teachers need to be empowered to encourage their students to become better citizens of the future. This is the primary vision of the National Education Policy 2020. He said only an empowered teacher can empower his students, so training is required for all the teachers.

The pharmacy teachers in India need psychological, philosophical and sociological development in their profession to encourage their students to learn modern education. They have to develop a ‘quality and equity-based education’ method in their institutions. All the students in a classroom are not intellectually equal to learn or understand the lectures of a teacher. It is the duty of the teacher to bring up the standard of the intellectually poor students to the level of others. Psychological training is required here on how to handle such students.

He said the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has now suggested to all universities and institutions to conduct training programmes and skill development courses for the teachers. But it is only a syllabus-based programme, but not a programme to increase the teaching capacity of the teachers. Most of the new teachers do not know how to teach their students and how to handle a classroom with scientific and technical tools. He said teachers should undergo training before they are getting appointed. Modern teaching method is different from the conventional method of teaching. He said the PCI should bring out a mandatory rule that every teacher should undergo three training programmes in the very first year of his career, and it should be on the lines of the national education policy.

“There are several tools to educate students. Many of the teachers are still following the traditional method of teaching. They do not know how to use technologies in the teaching profession to provide high-quality instruction to their students. Modern teaching methods employ various innovative methodologies to keep students engaged in learning activities. Big transformation is happening in pharmacy education also. Even some of the teachers do not know how to do one power-point presentation. So, training is mandatorily required to the teachers on modern teaching methods and on creating a professionalism among them,” he told Pharmabiz.

Dr Kar said he is planning to conduct a training programme in November for the teachers of Odisha under the leadership of Odisha Pharmacy Intellectual Forum (OPIF) to which teachers from all the fifty colleges in the state will be invited.
