ICMR invites researchers to develop evidence-based guidelines for empirical use of antibiotics

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has announced a Request for Expressions of Interest (EoI) aimed at inviting researchers, academicians, and scientists to participate in the formulation of evidence-based guidelines for the empirical use of antibiotics in the management of sepsis, dental infections, and vaginal discharge. This ambitious initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance national healthcare standards by ensuring the latest and most robust evidence-informed clinical decision-making.

To address the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance and ensure appropriate use of antibiotics in various clinical conditions, the ministry of health & family welfare (MoHFW) has initiated a collaborative project to develop evidence-based guidelines for the empirical use of antibiotics. The project brings together multiple key institutions, including the Department of Health & Family Welfare (DoHFW), the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and the Department of Health Research (DHR).

This initiative marks a significant step towards advancing evidence-based medicine in India, particularly in the critical area of antibiotic stewardship, where overuse and misuse have far-reaching consequences for public health.

This initiative seeks to systematically compile the best available evidence from existing literature to guide healthcare professionals in making informed decisions regarding the initiation, choice, duration, and adjustment of antibiotic therapy in different clinical scenarios. The evidence will be synthesized through systematic reviews and meta-analyses, utilizing the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach to assess the strength and quality of the recommendations.

The teams selected for these reviews will be responsible for conducting rigorous evaluations of existing research on these well-defined clinical questions, identified by the Guideline Development Groups (GDGs) working on antibiotic guidelines.

ICMR invites applications from professionals, scientists (including those within ICMR), and faculty with regular employment in medical institutions, research institutes, universities, or colleges. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in systematic review methodologies and have published at least two systematic reviews in PubMed-indexed journals related to the subject areas mentioned above. The proposal must include a team comprising a subject expert, a methodologist/systematic review expert, and a statistician.

The systematic reviews are highly time-sensitive, and the commissioned teams will be required to complete their work within a strict three-month timeframe.

ICMR will provide financial support of up to Rs. 5 lakhs to non-ICMR institutes for conducting the reviews. This budget includes contingency funds for software purchases, database access, meetings, honorarium, and travel expenses. ICMR institutes may use intramural funding to support their participation.

Interested researchers with the requisite expertise and resources are encouraged to submit their Expressions of Interest via the provided Google form link by 31st August, 2024. The proposals will undergo a review by an expert committee, with the final selection of participants to be notified in September 2024 through email and the ICMR website.

For further details, interested applicants can contact Dr. Roopa Hariprasad, Scientist-F, Centre for Evidence for Guidelines, Department of Health Research, at roopa.hariprasad@gov.in or 9818278797
