 Sales of medicines through Jan Aushadhi Stores, under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), a flagship scheme of the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), have reported a 19 per cent growth during the fiscal year 2023-24, exceeding the target set by the implementing agency, Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMDBI).
In FY23-24, PMBI sold Jan Aushadhi medicines worth Rs. 1,470 crore, leading to savings of approximately Rs. 7,350 crore. The sales registered a 19% growth compared to Rs. 1,235.95 crore at Maximum Retail Price (MRP) registered in the fiscal year 2022-23. The sales in 2022-23 were a 38.3 per cent growth compared to Rs. 893.56 crore sales in the year 2021-22.
According to the Economic Survey, 2024, till now, more than 12,500 PMBJKs have been opened, covering all districts.
"It has made an impact on the common masses and the poor by providing quality medicines at affordable prices. The Scheme is particularly delivering greater savings on medicines for chronic diseases. On average, 10– 12 Lakh people visit Jan Aushadhi Kendras daily," said the Survey.
According to a presentation by the Department of Pharmaceuticals in the beginning of 2023, the target was to complete 10,500 JAKs, completing 2,000 medicines and 300 surgicals and a sales of Rs. 1,200 crore by 2024-25.
The Bureau has achieved the target for total number of JAKs and the sales target much ahead of the deadline, shows the numbers.
With an objective of making quality generic medicines available at affordable prices to all, PMBJP was launched by the DoP in November, 2008. DoP has said that medicines available under PMBJP are priced 50%-90% less than that of branded prices.
