In a bid to bolster clinical research efforts across India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has announced a call for expressions of interest (EOI) to expand the Indian Clinical Trial and Education Network (INTENT). INTENT, established by the ICMR, serves as a collaborative platform for medical colleges, hospitals, and research institutes aimed at conducting scientifically rigorous clinical trials addressing critical health issues.
With a focus on providing evidence-based solutions to national health priorities, INTENT currently encompasses 47 institutes across the country. However, recognizing the need for broader participation and enhanced capacity, ICMR now seeks to extend the network by inviting public and private medical research institutes to contribute to its activities.
The scope of clinical trials to be conducted under INTENT is expansive, covering drugs, devices, vaccines, and biologics developed in collaboration with academia, start-ups, or industry partners. These trials are expected to address pressing health concerns, including rare genetic diseases, with the potential to influence national health policies.
Under the coordination of the Clinical Studies & Trials Unit (CSTU) within the ICMR, selected centers from the EOI applicants will receive priority as trial sites. The network will provide essential study support services such as data management, statistical support, insurance coverage, and regulatory advice centrally. Financial support will be allocated based on individual clinical research projects, ensuring the necessary resources for their successful execution.
“With the deadline for EOIs fast approaching, medical research institutes across the country are gearing up to participate in this landmark initiative, underscoring India's commitment to advancing medical science and improving public health outcomes. Interested parties are encouraged to reach out to Dr. Aparna Mukherjee at aparna.sinha.deb@icmr.gov.in for further inquiries regarding the EOI process,” according to an ICMR official.
“As India continues to grapple with diverse health challenges, the expansion of the INTENT network represents a crucial step towards harnessing the collective expertise of medical institutions nationwide to address these issues effectively,” the official added.
