Indian veterinary care is getting a boost with genetic testing for canines to ascertain health risks, enable early diagnosis and know its breed among others.

Genetic testing for canines is a game changer going by the prevalence of several neuromuscular disease and hereditary illness. It is here Akash Murali and Arunav Vaish, co-founders, Urban Animal, noted that today pets are considered as important family members and are extremely pampered by their owners. In an attempt to take better care of them, the concept of preventive healthcare for dogs is in vogue.

This idea is widely recognized globally and in India, though it is gradual, the dog genetic testing market is certainly growing.  We at Urban Animal have pioneered the trend of preventive healthcare for dogs in the country and are keen to capture a significant share in the dog genetic testing market.

To this end our objective is to ensure dog DNA testing is easily accessible, accurate, and affordable for every pet parent in India. It is on a mission to provide pet dogs with pain-free, long, healthy and happy lives and increase their lifespan within the next decade by promoting the early detection of diseases, Murali and Vaish told Pharmabiz.

In India, pet dog population is forecasted to reach over 31 million by the end of this year. This will be a key driver for the dog genetic testing market to gain popularity and grow. Aligned with this growth, Urban Animal is on a mission to improve the quality of dogs’ lives and ensure their longevity through early diagnosis of diseases, they added.

The company leverages Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology to process and analyze the pets’ DNA through these tests. Ideal for all breeds and ages, the DIY (do it yourself), pain-free tests can be conducted with a simple swab at the convenience of pet owners. The reports offer detailed insights into dogs’ predisposition to genetic conditions and the potential health risks it could develop in the future.

As per industry reports, the global animal genetics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.48% from 2022 to 2027 and touch the $7.66 billion mark by 2027. The APAC region is one of the fastest-growing markets, with the DNA testing segment holding the largest market share. Specifically, the dog diagnostics market had the largest market share last year and this trend is expected to continue from 2022 to 2027 as well. Urban Animal is aiming to contribute to this growth and intends to successfully complete 1,00,000 tests in the next two years and eventually, secure 7.7% of the dog DNA testing market.

The increase in animal diseases demands genetic testing to identify and diagnose fast. Additionally, with the pet-adopting culture gaining prominence, the need for genetic testing is evident to ensure the health and well-being of animals, especially dogs.
