The Hyderabad-based Indian Institute of Immunological Limited (IIL) has embarked on a mission to eradicate rabies disease by conducting mass vaccination drive through about one hundred centers across India.

Commemorating the ‘World Zoonosis Day’, on July 6th this week, the authorities at IIL have administered more than 1 lakh doses of rabies vaccine to animals through about 100 centers in the country.

According to Dr K Anand, Kumar, managing director of Indian Immunological Limited, the company is committed towards playing a significant role in providing cost effective tools for the control of various zoonotic diseases in the country including the dreaded rabies. Apart from its flagship “Anti-Rabies vaccine”, IIL has a range of vaccines for prevention of such zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis, leptospirosis etc and will be rolling out human vaccines against dengue, chikungunya, and zika etc. The new addition in its range is the “Covid 19” vaccine which is expected to start its human trials soon.

As part of IIL’s “One Health” campaign, every year IIL partners with many Veterinary dispensaries, NGOs and Veterinarians across the country and conducts rabies awareness camps. “As we do every year, this year also as part of our ‘One Health’ campaign, we have conducted vaccination camps across 100 centers and administered more than one lakh free doses of Raksharab anti-rabies vaccines to animals. Our main aim and objective is to create awareness on various zoonotic diseases and eradicate rabies through mass vaccination drives in the country,” said Dr. Anand Kumar.

While explaining about zoonotic diseases, the IIL MD said that diseases that transmit from animals to human beings are called zoonotic diseases. More than 70 per cent of all emerging diseases such as rabies, swine flu, brucellosis, leptospirosis, porcine cysticercosis, nipah, zika, etc. that affect humans are zoonotic in nature.

In India, occurrence of rabies is prevalent and accounts for more than 90 per cent of all zoonotic cases reported in the country. India accounts for a significant number of rabies deaths reported worldwide. The economic cost of dog mediated rabies has been estimated to be US$ 8.6 billion. Prophylaxis through vaccination is the most cost-effective intervention to reduce incidence of disease. Several countries have been able to reduce the number of rabies related human deaths through vaccination of dogs. Awareness, accurate diagnosis, improvement in sanitary conditions, prophylactic vaccinations are all measures that need to be taken to restrain and eradicate the spread.
