The Institute of Clinical Research India (ICRI) stated that there is a need to improve the healthcare and medical practices along with patient care, and the only effective way to do this is to conduct fruitful clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of medicines.
"Clinical trials are being conducted world-wide to make the earth a better place to live in. But the industry itself has not got sufficient manpower to combat the need of rapid vaccine or medicine development after the human trials," stated Kanishk Duggal, COO of ICRI.
He added that clinical trial industry offers number of career opportunities to doctors, and science and pharma graduates.
Duggal added, “Currently, the industry is facing a shortage of trained professionals and is looking for over 70,000 professionals. Since the industry is doubling every year and the Covid-19 has been the single biggest contributor in the rise of the industry, people have now understood the benefits of clinical trials as the human race can only survive when the vaccine development is ensured through clinical trials.”
Duggal stated that the clinical trials market worldwide is worth over US$ 44 billion and will grow to double in next 5-8 years. It is estimated that industry will generate an employment over 3 to 5 lakh globally.
Duggal added, “Clinical research provides the career opportunities to all level of science & medical graduates and post graduates. Since the field lack the awareness in terms of career opportunities and progression it provides thus is generally overlooked by the students and henceforth the field is facing the shortage of trained or skilled professionals.”
Clinical research professionals in India can work in the following organizations such as pharma companies, biotech companies, clinical research organizations (CROs), site management organizations (SMOs), hospitals and IT companies (clinical data management).
