A mutually agreeable and closely connected relationship is necessary among industry, trade and regulatory offices for a better and comfortable pharmaceutical business in any part of the country.
In order to create such an environment, the industry and trade should go hand in hand with the enforcement agencies, commented J Jayaseelan, vice-president of the industry division of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), while condemning the cruel murder of Neha Shoree, the zonal licensing authority at Mohali in Punjab.
Jayaseelan was responding to Pharmabiz in an online incident response forum along with traders, industry leaders and regulatory officers.
Dr TV Narayana, president of the IPA wanted the government to conduct a speedy investigation in the case and punish the culprits and masterminds behind it.
SV Veeramani, past president of the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (IDMA) said the traders and people of industry should provide all facilities to the regulatory officers for their inspection work at the premises and both the business communities are supposed to obey the law of the land. He said government must take legal action against criminals who block the way of the regulators.
Revi Uday Bhaskar, director general of the Pharmexcil said the regulatory officers need protection for routine work. He said all the drug regulatory offices are vulnerable to attacks all over India due to lack of protection.
Dr. Mihir Kumar Kar, president of Odisha IPA said the incident is a wake-up call for the government to seriously consider the profession of drug regulation and provide adequate protection to the officers.
Dr. Mohan Kale, principal of Konkan College of Pharmacy in Mumbai said the incident shows the failure of the government system. Government should take stern action against such culprits and hang such mafias to death to strengthen the work of regulatory bodies. The FDA regulators should raid such premises with due care and with total security support.
Dr. Subhash C Mandal, chairman of the regulatory affairs division of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association said the government should take steps against rackets dealing with spurious drugs and habit forming drugs which are on the rise. The infrastructure and manpower in almost all states are inadequate and no security measures have been provided to the drugs control officers. All state governments should provide adequate resources and securities to the drugs control officers.
Although Pharmabiz has contacted office-bearers of AIOCD and various state associations, no state trade body has responded or condemned the incident. However, the chairman of the Trade Reforms Committee of the Tamil Nadu Chemists and Druggists Association (TNCDA), Kovai Kasiraman, has responded that this kind of incident should not repeat anywhere in India and this tragedy should be the last one of its kind.
