To usher in best industry practices in curriculum which is being offered currently as a post graduate specialisation in medical devices, students of NIPER Ahmedabad will get industry oriented knowledge as a part of its tie up with leading pharma companies like Johnson & Johnson and Sun Pharma. NIPER Ahmedabad bears the distinction of offering a Master of Science course in Medical Devices exclusively through NIPER, Ahmedabad campus since 2012.

Meanwhile, NIPER Ahmedabad is also planning to collaborate with Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and medical colleges in the country to bring in practical know-how and industry practices for research and development in medical devices sector and to further initiate setting up of the government mandated National Centre for Medical Devices (NCMD) at Gandhinagar as per the government’s mandate.

“These tie-ups are required to give the much required boost to the evolving medical device sector in the country and students from NIPER will be able to avail fellowships and internships with respective medical device companies to take forward the process of developing high end medical devices like cardiac stents and orthopaedic implants,” says Dr Kiran Kalia, director, NIPER, Ahmedabad.

Signing of two MoUs with Indian medical devices manufacturers, collaborations with IITs and medical colleges will strengthen the roadmap of medical devices sector in the country, she added.

This would also complement the first upcoming medical device testing lab of the country at Vadodara in Gujarat. The Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) for the past few years has actively engaged both the NIPERs and the pharma industry to build partnership in areas of education, research and development.

NIPER Ahmedabad has also signed MoU with Sahajanand Laser Technologies to develop an ecosystem for development of medical devices sector in the country. This collaboration is helping customise our curriculum for development of skilled manpower in the sector.

As per official sources, a total of 17 MoUs were signed between seven NIPERs and pharma industry for academia industry linkages in the past few years. Academia-industry linkage is a significant development as one of the critical factors in building innovation ecosystem for medical devices industry.
