Crowdstrike, a cyber security tech company and ClearTouch, a provider of cloud-based technology, are making concerted efforts to safeguard data privacy in pharma and healthcare establishments. On the occasion of the Data Privacy day observed globally on January 28, the theme for this year is Think Privacy First. The objective is to sensitize individuals and disseminate privacy practices and principles.

According to Drew Bagley, VP & Counsel for Privacy and Cyber Policy, CrowdStrike, “Today we live in such ultra-connected world which is technology omnipresent. Yet transparency and security are often lagging behind. It is important to take cognisance that cyber attacks pose some of the most significant threats to privacy today. This makes Data Privacy Day an opportunity for individuals and organizations processing data to reflect on key privacy principles and responsibilities.

Uthaman Bakthikrishnan, executive vice president, ClearTouch, noted data privacy is a fundamental human right and that it is our responsibility to protect the personal information of our customers and employees. One of the key challenges in protecting personal data is the fact that it is often collected and stored in a variety of different locations, including on-premise servers, cloud-based systems, and mobile devices.

“In recent years we have seen a significant rise in data leak extortion incidents, whereby cyber threat actors attempt to hold data hostage, including personal or health information unless they are paid. Identity-based attacks are also on the rise where compromised credentials are leveraged to access accounts and access sensitive data. Concurrent with this trend, countries around the globe have adopted privacy regulations that include cyber security requirements. Therefore, it is important for individuals and organizations alike to ask what the current risks to their privacy are and how they are mitigating them,” Bagley added.

As we recognize Data Privacy Day, it is important to focus on the big picture of incentivizing the adoption of the best way to protect data rather than arbitrary geo-restrictions not respected by cyber adversaries, said Bagley.

“In today's digital age, data breaches, identity theft, and cyber attacks are all too common, and the consequences can be devastating. Furthermore, the growing use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in customer service interactions has recently become a matter of worry for individuals. With these technologies, there is a greater risk of personal information being analyzed and used without the individual's consent. We have implemented strict data retention policies and regularly conduct security audits to ensure compliance with data privacy laws,” said Bakthikrishnan.

Our platform provides customers with the ability to manage their personal information and to opt-out of certain types of interactions. Additionally, we provide customers with the ability to access and request the deletion of their personal information, which ensures transparency. We also keep them informed about any changes to our data protection policy and any new regulations that may affect them, said Bakthikrishnan.
