Export Products (EP) division of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) has urged the pharmaceutical companies to give inputs on market access issues for exports to the ASEAN countries. The EP (Pharma) Division deals with export promotion of pharmaceutical products and the administrative matters pertaining to the Pharmexcil.

“In order to examine market impediments that companies face and to take apt actions to increase exports to regions with export potential, the EP Pharma Division of Department of Commerce in coordination with Pharmexcil will engage with Indian exporters in the coming weeks,” informed Udaya Bhaskar, director general, Pharmexcil.

The ASEAN region is the fifth largest in terms of exports and identified as one of the regions with high export potential. Countries of focus in ASEAN are Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Brunei.

According to Pharmexcil, it is proposed to continue with the existing Central Sector Market Access Initiative Scheme (MAI) beyond March, 2021 for a period of five years i.e. upto 31st March, 2026.

The Scheme would provide assistance to eligible agencies for activities and initiatives for promotion of Indian exports, focusing on the development and promotion of exports from the MSME sector; development of districts as export hub for the identified products and services; promotion of exports of the traditional products and services like Ayush, Yoga, Geographical Indications products and tribal products; development and promotion of exports from North Eastern Region (NER), Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and hill regions; and empowerment and promotion of export activities of people belonging to the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe, women exporters, startups and export oriented entrepreneurs, self-employed and youth.

ASEAN is a $11.4 billion generic market with major contributions from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia. Pharmexcil has been regularly organizing delegations to the ASEAN region covering major countries with export potential.

The industry has always been upbeat towards the planned interactions with local industry and authorities providing awareness on enhanced market access, registration system, public procurement system and establishing new contacts for prospective business in future.
