The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) under its Promoting Academic Research Conversion to Enterprise (PACE) scheme has invited research proposals from academic institutes and universities for supporting affordable technology/product development from discovery to pre-commercialisation stage.

BIRAC launched the PACE programme to support academia to develop technology/product up to Proof of Concept (PoC stage) of societal/ national importance and its subsequent validation by an industrial partner.

Under the scheme, BIRAC supports academia to develop technologies/products (upto proof of concept stage) of national importance and their subsequent validation towards commercialization through Academic Innovation Research (AIR) and Contract Research Scheme (CRS) schemes. While the AIR scheme aims at development of POC by academia with or without the involvement of the industry, the CRS aims at validation of prototype/technology by the industrial partner.

The research focus the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the areas of healthcare for detection of disease, management of chronic conditions, delivery of health services and drug discovery (National Mission for Artificial Intelligence), creating self-learning systems in digital fields like radiology, pathology, and genomics to augment the future of healthcare.

Other area includes devices and diagnostics for maternal and child health, development of indigenous and cost-effective therapies for combating anti microbial resistance (AMR) & development of rapid and cost-effective diagnostic kits to identify AMR pathogens.

It also includes development of vaccines for the diseases of epidemic potential. Medtech interventions to address challenges of healthcare system at primary, secondary and tertiary level and solutions to promote faster recovery and rehabilitation of disabled.

Academic institute, university, NGO, or research foundation having proper registration/accreditation from a government body are eligible to apply either alone or in partnership with academia or industry (while involvement of industry is optional for AIR scheme, it is mandatory to have an industrial partner for CRS).

The last date for submitting the proposal is August 16, 2021.
