The Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) has recruited a total of 42 drug control officers with opening of a new district office at Rajkot in the Saurashtra region headed by an Assistant Commissioner for better enforcement of drug laws in the state.

There are a total of 25 district offices in Gujarat of which Rajkot is one of the biggest in the seven districts of Saurashtra region. There are around 84 drug inspectors, 42 senior drug inspectors, 26 assistant commissioners, six deputy commissioners and five joint commissioners headed by a commissioner in Gujarat.

There are in total three testing laboratories in the state, two dedicated food testing laboratories in Rajkot and Bhuj respectively and one state of the art food and drug testing laboratory at Baroda.

The existing food and drug testing laboratory in Baroda has the capacity to test 7,500 drug samples annually, of which the lab in Baroda tests around 6,000 to 6,500 samples in a year. With this capacity building measure, the new drug testing lab will also be able to test around 7,500 samples in a year, doubling the drug testing efforts in the state to ensure access to only safe and efficacious drugs across the state.

Meanwhile, Gujarat government has also formed a committee to oversee recruitment of manpower for the state National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) cell for effective detection of ceiling price violations in drugs and devices. A total of seven personnel including a scientific officer will be deputed for the purpose of collection of data on price violations in the state based on the much awaited financial support from the Central Government.

Gujarat FDCA has already submitted Utility Certificate (UC) for the funds to the NPPA for setting up the infrastructure of NPPA cell with an amount of Rs.7 lakh sanctioned for the purpose from the centre as a part of Central government’s mandate to set up price monitoring cell in all the states.
