The National Policy on R&D and Innovation in Pharma-Medtech sector will provide immense scope for entrepreneurship, and novel treatment approaches for the unmet medical needs, said Dr S Narasimha Murthy, founder- director, Institute for Drug Delivery and Biomedical Research (IDBR).
To this end, IDBR foresees a lot of emphasis on research and innovation in the future years. Developing the manpower with the required skill set to meet the demand in the pharmaceutical research domain would be crucial for the future. Particularly, with the new national policy on Research & Development and Innovation in the Pharma-Medtech sector, there would be a lot of scope for originality, entrepreneurship, and novel treatment pathways, he added.
In this direction, the IDBR has several ongoing initiatives. The Institute conducts hands-on workshops and training programs for graduates, and provides opportunities to perform research as interns, and students, and collaborates with educational institutions and research entities, said Dr Murthy.
Currently, several novel areas of drug delivery and biomedical research are being explored at IDBR. Microneedle technology has been introduced to deliver drugs into the back of the eye for the treatment of macular degeneration, topical delivery technologies for the treatment of psoriasis, metallic nanoparticles for theranostic applications, future contraceptives, and novel methods of treatment of anemia, infections, and metabolic disorders.
Recently, Dr Murthy was honored as the Fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FAPS) by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APS) which is the UK-based professional membership body for pharmaceutical scientists.
APS represents individuals and organizations from around the globe, throughout their development, in the delivery of excellence in the pharmaceutical science sector.
The FAPS award is the highest and most prestigious honor given to members selected by the APS Fellowship Selection Committee in recognition of their contribution to the Academy and their accomplishment and impact in any sector of the pharmaceutical sciences.
Dr. Murthy is one of the three renowned scientists who received the award this year. Here Dr. Murthy was selected considering his significant contribution to pharmaceutical sciences and his capability in topical and transdermal drug delivery. Last year too, he was recognized as a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Fellowship and also received the AAPS Pharmaceutical Global Health award in 2022.
Dr. Murthy, along with Dr. Shivakumar, founded IDBR with a mission to foster drug delivery research and to provide a platform for young minds to explore their scientific ideas. Since its inception, the organization has been successful in contributing significantly to research on the treatment of chronic disorders, licensed technologies to industries, and educated/trained several young aspiring scientists.
